Ossabaw Island Pigs

Recognized as an American feral breed by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, the hogs of Ossabaw were likely introduced by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. The animals adapted well to the island ecosystem and continue to thrive.

Free-range Donkeys

Sandy Torrey-West, the island’s best-known and longest resident, introduced a few Sicilian donkeys to Ossabaw in 1965 and the herd had expanded to more than 100 members by the late 1990s. Mrs. West tells us the story of the donkeys in her own words.

Five of the world’s seven species of sea turtles can be found in the waters of coastal Georgia and Georgia’s barrier islands, including Ossabaw, provide vitally important nesting grounds for loggerhead sea turtles.
