Super Museum Sunday Ossabaw Trip

Sunday February 11, 2024

 

Enjoy a day trip, free of admission, with only a $50 boat fee. Boat transportation by Bull River Cruises and Mike Neal. Your trip will consist of a walking tour of the historic north end of Ossabaw Island and some time on your own to walk or sit and rock on the Club House front porch. The boat departs at 12:00 pm from the Rodney J. Hall Boat Ramp on Diamond causeway. The boat will return by 4:30 pm. Bring your own snack and drink, there is no canteen on the island. Space is limited to 32 participants. You will receive a confirmation email the week of the event with all of the details.

A day trip to Ossabaw for descendants of people with connections to the island from 1760 – 1980. If your ancestors were tenant farmers, land owners, Torrey family employees, Freedmen, enslaved people, hunting guides, cattlemen, or timbermen?  Were you a member of the Ossabaw Island Project (OIP) or a Genesis member, please join us for a picnic and time together.

Paint, sketch, write, or take photos on Ossabaw Island. Let the island be your muse. After a brief history presentation, you’ll have several hours to wander the North End on your own and experience the island’s inspiring features of marsh vistas, maritime forests, wildlife sightings. Bring your own art supplies.

A Hands-On Archaeology Experience

 

Led by the Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources’ Archaeology Division and Pennsylvania State University, this excavation of a 19th-century plantation site is the sixth year of a ten-year archaeological project on Ossabaw Island.

Lift Every Voice:  Savannah’s African American History Museums’ Fee-Free Day Trip

This “fee free” morning trip to Ossabaw is a walking tour of the North End plantation site, including three restored tabby cabins built by enslaved Africans as their housing. Learn about Titus, Hercules and Betty in the 1770s; the Bond brothers in the 1850s and 1860s; and the Bond’s descendants, the founders of Pin Point community in the 1880s. After visiting Ossabaw Island travel to the Pin Point Heritage Museum for a tour from an Ossabaw Island descendant.

Accompany Georgia DNR Sea Turtle Conservation Program interns as they inventory loggerhead turtle nests for eggs and live hatchlings on Ossabaw Island’s South Beach. Depart 8:00 am from Delegal Creek Marina on Skidaway Island, just outside of Savannah. After a 30-minute boat ride across Ossabaw Sound, arrive on Ossabaw Island , then travel by pick up truck to the beach to learn about turtle hatchings. Enjoy a picnic lunch (bring your own lunch) at the pavillion at the south end bone yard beach. Return to the North End as boat departs the island for the mainland at 2:00 pm.

A Hands-On Indigo Dyeing Experience: Ossabaw Island Indigo Day Trips

Elizabeth DuBose shares the history of Ossabaw indigo and provides instruction on creating fresh-leaf dye vats and guides participants through the dyeing process.
